On February 5, 2020, the following meeting of authorized representatives of the Caspian littoral states, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Institute of the Caspian Sea, ended in Ashgabat, informs the web-site of the State News Service of Turkmenistan.

The agenda of the meeting with the participation of representatives of relevant ministries and relevant structures of Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan is the approval of the draft Protocol on cooperation in the fight against illegal harvesting of biological resources (poaching) in the Caspian Sea.

The document, the preparation of which was undertaken by the Turkmen side, is intended to supplement the Agreement on Security Cooperation in the Caspian Sea, signed at the III Summit of the Heads of Caspian littoral states, held in 2010 in Baku (Azerbaijan).

In accordance with this document, an intergovernmental Commission on the conservation, rational use of aquatic biological resources of the Caspian Sea and the management of their joint stocks has been created.

Having broad powers, the Commission annually determines the total allowable catches of joint aquatic biological resources and allocates them to national quotas, regulates the harvesting of these resources, approves fishing rules, coordinates research programs, etc.

Being an active participant in the international dialogue in this direction, Turkmenistan makes every effort to ensure that this interaction has a consistent, integrated and constructive nature, including in the context of achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
