On February 28, 2023, at the Gaudan-Bajgiran checkpoints on the Turkmen-Iranian border, working meetings and negotiations were held with the participation of the heads of the customs services of Turkmenistan and Iran, during which priority vectors of bilateral relations were discussed.

In the first half of the day, a working meeting took place at the Bajgiran customs post of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The parties considered a wide range of issues, in particular, the implementation of bilateral documents previously concluded between the State Customs Service of Turkmenistan and the Customs Department of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the intensification of joint measures to prevent customs offenses, the activities of the Gaudan-Bajgiran joint border market and others. During the visit, the members of the delegation got acquainted with the formation of a customs post here and visited the historical building of the 1906 checkpoint, which, as noted, is an object of cultural heritage of Iran.

In the afternoon, the Iranian delegation was met on the Turkmen side. The guests got acquainted with the infrastructure of the checkpoint, its equipment and organization of work. The staff of the post showed a number of presentations on the activities of the checkpoint, a video was presented describing the process and specifics of the customs system in Turkmenistan.

Later, negotiations between the delegations continued in the administrative building of the Gaudan customs post, during which the parties substantively discussed proposals regarding the provision of transit services, the use of the e-TIR electronic system, the exchange of customs data, and joint training events.

At the end of the meeting, they expressed confidence that the development of customs cooperation would give the Turkmen-Iranian trade and economic cooperation a qualitatively new content, significantly increase the efficiency of using the transport and transit potential of the two states.

The meeting was also attended by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Turkmenistan and the Consul General of Turkmenistan in the city of Mashhad.

It should be noted that the official visit of the esteemed President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov to the Islamic Republic of Iran in June 2022 gave a powerful impetus to the interaction between the customs services of the two countries. This is the second joint meeting of delegations on the Turkmen-Iranian border.
