From May 22 to May 26, 2023, with the assistance of the World Customs Organization (WCO) and under the sponsorship of the China Customs Cooperation Foundation (CCF China), a seminar on risk management was organized for Turkmen customs officers. The seminar was attended by 20 workers from various departments involved in the process of implementing the risk management system in the customs authorities of Turkmenistan.
The five-day workshop was hosted by WCO Accredited Risk Management Expert Mr. Akhilesh Pandey from Indian Customs and WCO Pre-accredited Risk Management Expert Ms Yuko Mamiya from Japan Customs.
During the seminar, the experts presented the WCO Risk Management Compendium, the latest WCO materials and tools in the field of risk identification and profiling. Topics covered included risk management at the organizational level; operational risk management (i.e. risk assessment, profiling and targeting, including information and intelligence).
The participants discussed the issues how to identify and address risks, as well as how to develop an effective profile using the methodology outlined in the WCO Customs Risk Management Handbook. At the workshop, the Theoretical and Practical Sessions provided participants with the opportunity to exchange views and experiences with WCO facilitators.
As noted by the workshop participants, this was a good opportunity to strengthen their existing risk management processes and adopt new approaches for future risk assessment, profiling and detection operations, including sharing of information and intelligence.
The State Customs Service of Turkmenistan expressed its gratitude to the WCO and experts for organizing and holding a seminar on risk management.
