Seminar on the prevention of illegal trade in ozone-depleting substances was held at the Lebap Velavat Customs Office

Seminar organized by the Ozone Center under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan on September 2, 2019 at the Lebap Velayat Customs Office was dedicated to measures to prevent illegal trade in ozone-depleting substances, which were attended by customs officers from the Lebap Velayat Customs Office and subordinate customs posts.

The event was organized as part of a joint project of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) on the phase-out Plan for Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) from Turkmenistan (stage 1).

Aspects of the fulfillment of Turkmenistan’s obligations under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, Vienna Conventions for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, laws and regulations for the protection of the ozone layer in Turkmenistan, the role of customs service for the control of ozone-depleting substances have been highlighted at the seminar.

The Montreal Protocol and the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer have become the starting point of international cooperation aimed at protecting the ozone layer.

The ozone layer is vital for all life on Earth, because it filters out UV-B radiation, which can have serious consequences for human health and the Earth’s environment. Depletion of the ozone layer leads to a greater exposure of the Earth to UV-B radiation.

At the end of the seminar, participants were awarded certificates.
